Hines kicks off construction of tower on former Houston Chronicle site

Houston-based developer Hines announced July 18 that construction has begun on its highly anticipated tower on the former Houston Chronicle site downtown. It's expected to open in late 2021, according to a July 18 press release.

Hines is partnering on the project with IvanhoĆ© Cambridge, a Canada-based real estate investment company that Hines has worked with on projects in Chicago, Toronto and Paris. Law firm Vinson & Elkins and Hines will be the tower’s anchor tenants, leasing 212,000 square feet and 155,000 square feet, respectively. Hines will relocate from Williams Tower in the Galleria area once the new tower is built, according to a spokesman. Vinson & Elkins will relocate from 1001 Fannin, where the law firm leases more than 300,000 square feet in a lease that expires in 2021, HBJ previously reported.

Situated diagonally on the 800 block of Texas Avenue, the tower will be 47 stories and 1 million square feet. The design architect is Connecticut-based Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, which also worked on previous Hines buildings in Houston, Minneapolis, Boston, Chicago and Italy, as well as the new Salesforce Tower in San Francisco. The building will be designed to achieve LEED Platinum and WELL Building certifications. Rhode Island-based Gilbane is the general contractor.
